2019 Dakar: 18th straight win for KTM and Michelin

Three years after his maiden Dakar success, Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Team/ Michelin) finished on top again to earn Michelin’s 36th victory on the cross-country classic, as well as KTM’s 18th on the trot in association with the French tyre firm. The Australian finished clear of his team-mate and last year’s victor Matthias Walkner, while Sam Sunderland (Red Bull KTM Factory Team/Michelin) made it an all-KTM/Michelin top three.

FIA World Council decisions

A number of key decisions were taken at the FIA World Council meeting that was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on December 5. Many of them referred to some of the global championships in which Michelin is active, namely the WEC, WRC and Formula E.

Volkswagen and Michelin establish new Pikes Peak record!

After collecting four WRC Manufacturers’ titles together, Volkswagen and Michelin returned to their winning ways on Sunday with victory at the celebrated Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, USA. Frenchman Romain Dumas posted a new record for the course in the German make’s exciting I.D R full-electric prototype.

Five years after Sébastien Loeb stopped the clock at 8m13.878s driving the 850-horsepower, Michelin-equipped Peugeot 208 T16 in 2015, Volkswagen picked up the gauntlet this year in an attempt to better the nine-time world rally champion’s record for the 20-kilometre, 156-turn ‘Race to the Clouds’ which climbs to an altitude of 4,301 metres.

To benefit from bespoke tyres for its twin-motor, four-wheel drive, 680-horsepower all-electric prototype, Volkswagen called on the expertise of Michelin.

The task of driving the new car – which accelerates from standstill to 100kph in just 2.25 seconds (faster than an F1 car) – was assigned to two-time Le Mans winner and former World Endurance champion Romain Dumas who is also a skilled rally driver (Porsche/Michelin) and a three-time previous Pikes Peak winner.

The basic target was to better the improve on the record for an electric car (8m57.118s) which was posted in 2016 by Rhys Millen. But VW and Dumas did much better than that, since the Frenchman smashed Loeb’s benchmark with a time of 7m57.148s to establish a new outright record!

Tänak earns Michelin’s 333rd WRC victory

The first Rally Chile to count towards the FIA World Rally Championship was won by Estonia’s Ott Tänak (Toyota Yaris WRC/Michelin) who notched up Michelin’s 333rd WRC success in the process. French world champions Sébastien Ogier (Citroën/Michelin) and Sébastien Loeb (Hyundai/Michelin) were second and third, while WRC2 victor was the young Finnish Michelin runner Kalle Rovanperä (Skoda).

FIA Formula E

Monaco glory for Vergne (DS Techeetah/Michelin)

Pole-sitter Jean-Eric Vergne collected his second win of the 2018/2019 FIA Formula E Championship in Monaco to go top of the provisional Drivers’ standings. Oliver Rowland (2nd, Nissan e.dams/Michelin), Felipe Massa (3rd, Venturi Formula E Team/Michelin) and Pascal Wehrlein (4th, Mahindra Racing/Michelin) made it four different teams in the day’s top-four, blanketed by just 1.439 seconds!
