MotoGP: teams head east to Japan

MotoGPTM kicks off the Pacific-Asian leg of the 2017 world championship this weekend with the Motul Grand Prix of Japan (Round 14), the first of three back-to-back races along with Australia and Malaysia. Provisional leader Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) stand out as the big favourites for this year’s title.

MotoGP: Honda’s Aragon one-two

The Gran Premio Movistar de Aragón – Round 14 of the 2017 MotoGPTM World Championship – was won by Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), ahead of team-mate Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team).

MotoGP: Sachsenring marks season’s midpoint

The 2017 MotoGPTM World Championship travels to Germany this weekend for the year’s ninth round which marks the season’s halfway point ahead of the summer break.

Barely a week after the Motul TT Assen, the MotoGP circus is in Germany this weekend for the GoPro Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, the last clash before the traditional summer truce.

With wins at Mugello and Barcelona to his name, Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) is the new championship leader, four points clear of Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) who came a cropper in the Netherlands just in front of the Ducati rider.

Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) went on to claim his 10th race win at Assen. It was also his first world championship victory since Catalonia 2016 and it has promoted him to third place in the provisional Riders’ standings, seven points short of his compatriot.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), who came third in the Netherlands, is fourth in the championship (+11 points) and is targeting a fifth straight win at the Sachsenring.

The German venue has long been happy hunting ground for circuit Honda since Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) has also won there four times in a row at MotoGP level.

Local fans will be particularly attentive to the performance of rookie Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech3). Germany’s only representative failed to score points for the first time this year at Assen, so he will be keen to recover on home soil where he was beaten to Moto2™ victory in 2016 by Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech3) by just 63 thousandths of a second!

KTM has entered a third bike for Mika Kallio who will line up alongside Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pol Espargaró and Bradley Smith.

On the tyre front, Michelin will bring front and rear asymmetric slick tyres in soft, medium and hard compounds to Sachsenring, which will feature a harder left-hand-side to cope with the stresses and attrition that side of the tyre goes through, whilst the right will be a softer compound to heat up quickly and give optimum performance through the track’s three right-hand turns. Soft and medium MICHELIN Power Rains will also be on hand if the weather proves wet.

First free practice kicks off at 9:50am local time on Friday, June 30.
