Michelin named official MotoGP tyre supplier until 2023

Dorna Sports has confirmed that Michelin will continue to be the official supplier of tyres to the MotoGPTM World Championship for five additional seasons over and above the existing arrangement. The contract’s extension until 2023 was announced today at this weekend’s MICHELIN® Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in the presence of Michelin Motorsport Director Pascal Couasnon and Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports.

Sweden revenge for ice-cool Neuville

After cruelly missing out on last year’s Rally Sweden win, Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20 Coupé WRC/Michelin) bounced back this week to win the 66th running of the winter classic, ahead of Craig Breen (Citroën C3 WRC/Michelin) and team-mate Andreas Mikkelsen. World champion Sébastien Ogier (Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin) was penalised by his running order and could manage no better than 10th at the flag.

Michelin targeting a 21st Le Mans victory

The ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) has published the list of the 60 competitors it has invited to contest this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours. Michelin, which is unbeaten in the French endurance classic since 1998, is targeting a 21st consecutive victory this time around, and its 27th in total since the race was first organised in 1923.

#Thaitest: Michelin enjoys positive first Thailand test On February 16-18, the MotoGP world paid its first ever visit to Buriram, Thailand, for the second pre-2018 championship test. It was a positive session for Michelin. Michelin tyres ran for the first time at the demanding, atypical, high-speed Buriram International Circuit in Thailand where they had to cope with hot weather. The conditions were dry throughout, while track temperatures reached as high as 50°C. The tyres performed well, delivering good grip and consistency, and all the available specs were able to complete a full race distance. The fastest lap (1m29.781s) was posted by Dani Pedrosa at the end of the final day’s session. Michelin took advantage of the three days to sign off the new compounds that had been put through their paces at Sepang two weeks previously. The final official test ahead of the 2018 world championship will be held in Qatar on March 1-3.

Thierry makes three Thierry Neuville has joined Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier as one of only three non-Scandinavian drivers to have won Rally Sweden since the fixture was first organised in 1950. The ice was ultimately broken in 2004 by that year’s champion Sébastien Loeb. True, he was aided by the woes of Petter Solberg, Marcus Grönholm and Markko Martin, but he successfully reached the Karlstad finish on the podium’s top step to stem the Scandinavians’ 54-year long invincibility on the winter event. In 2013, another Frenchman – Sébastien Ogier – steered the new Volkswagen Polo R WRC/Michelin to victory in the Värmland, before adding two further successes in the same car in 2015 and 2016. Last Sunday saw Thierry Neuville become the third non-Scandinavian to top the order in Sweden. Like Loeb and Ogier, the Belgian lost no time revealing his skill on ice when he posted some encouraging times in 2012 at the wheel of a Citroën DS3 WRC/Michelin. Last year, he was leading comfortably before an error on the Karlstad super-stage. This time around, though, he kept his Hyundai i20 Coupé WRC/Michelin between the snowbanks to pick up a deserved victory. And what if his maiden win in Sweden turned out to be the first step towards to his first world title, as was the case for Loeb in 2004 and Ogier in 2013?
